For centuries, artists have conjured images of witches, demons and phantoms – visions that both terrified and enthralled their audiences. This Halloween join Rose Balston to trace the shifting face of fear in Western art: from the witches of Dürer, to Bosch’s monstrous grotesques, Goya’s mocking satires to Munch’s silent scream, Bacon’s howling Popes and many more images drawn from the shadows of our imagination.

Each work is a mirror of its time: women demonised as scapegoats, monsters embodying social anxieties, satire undermining superstition, and the inward turn to psychological terror in the modern age.

Together, they reveal how art has never stopped showing us our monsters. It has continued to process our fears, changing form over time and finding new ways to rattle our spirit.

6.30pm arrival, 7.15pm art & music, 8.30pm more food, drinks and time to linger until 10pm.
